The first summer of the pandemic, we were forced to rest our tomato beds due to a tenacious strain of blight the year before. So, without garden fresh tomatoes to look forward to, I did the next best thing I could think of and threw hundreds and hundreds of zinnia seeds in our raised beds, virtually daring them not to sprout, flower, and eventually bring us much needed joy.
They must have seen that I wasn’t playing around because up they obediently sprang growing higher and higher until some of them grew even taller than me! Bees danced from blossom to blossom as butterflies fluttered and flew throughout the patch of vivid pinks, oranges, reds, and yellows.
If you were to ask me, I’d say that a lightly salted slice of a homegrown tomato is joy on a plate. I would also say though that giant zinnias in a garden alive with fluttering butterflies are a very close second.
